Plugable Products Tested and Approved for the Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro)
Product Owners | March 14, 2026
Apple has expanded its laptop lineup with a new, more affordable 13-inch MacBook. Unlike the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, which rely on M-series chips, this new model is powered by the A18 Pro chip (the same powerhouse found in the iPhone 16 Pro).
The move towards this new architecture results in Macs that are lighter, cooler, and more affordable. However, it also changes how you'll connect your devices. At Plugable, we have been closely monitoring these changes to make sure our users are completely prepared from day one and informed about which of our products work with the new Macs.
The Connectivity Shift: USB-C vs. Thunderbolt
The most significant change for the A18 Pro MacBook is the absence of Thunderbolt support. Because the A18 Pro chip is designed for mobile-first devices, the ports on this new MacBook include one USB 3.0 (USB-C) and a second USB 2.0 (USB-C) port rather than Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5.
What does this mean for you?
- Single Native Display: Similar to the base M1 and M2 chips before it, the A18 Pro supports only one external monitor natively through the USB-C port.
- Port Specifics: While the MacBook Neo features two USB-C ports, native video output is only supported via the USB 3.0 port. The USB 2.0 port is primarily intended for charging and low-speed data peripherals. This is a change for Apple, which has previously had consistency with port capability.

Supports one external display up to 4K at 60Hz (USB 3 port only). |
While this is sufficient for some, we know that one monitor is often not enough for a truly productive workflow. Because the MacBook Neo lacks native support for multiple extended displays, we have put a lot of emphasis on testing our DisplayLink and Silicon Motion-based adapters and docks.
