Blog: Plugable Products Tested and Approved for the Apple M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro
Product Owners | March 13, 2026
After months of anticipation, the M5 Apple Silicon family, including the powerhouse M5 Pro and M5 Max, has officially arrived in the new MacBook Pro lineup. As always, the Plugable team has been in the lab since we received our laptops, putting these machines through their paces with our docking stations, hubs, and adapters.
We are excited to report that compatibility remains excellent across our product line. Whether you're engaging in creative projects leveraging the new generation of Apple-designed Fusion Architecture or setting up an expansive multi-monitor workstation, Plugable offers the solutions you need to harness the full power of your device.
What’s New with the M5 Pro and M5 Max?
The shift to the M5 series introduces the Apple-designed Fusion Architecture, which connects two dies into a single System on a Chip (SoC) for unprecedented throughput.
- The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a new 18-core CPU architecture, including 6 super cores, the world's fastest CPU cores and 12 all-new performance cores optimized for power-efficient, multithreaded workloads.
- Beyond the 16-core Neural Engine, a Neural Accelerator is now integrated into every GPU core, delivering over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous M4 generation.
- Thunderbolt 5 continues to be a staple on Pro and Max CPU models, but each port is now supported by its own custom-designed controller directly on the chip for the industry’s most capable implementation.
- These laptops introduce the Apple N1 wireless networking chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for improved performance and reliability.
- New SSDs deliver up to 2x faster read/write performance, reaching speeds of up to 14.5GB/s, with starting storage now increased to 1TB for M5 Pro and 2TB for M5 Max
Note on MST: Despite these hardware leaps, our current test results indicate macOS (including the new macOS Tahoe) still does not support Multi-Stream Transport (MST). Plugable’s Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docking stations remain the recommended solution for multi-monitor enablement on Mac.
External Display Support: At a Glance
One of the most frequent questions we receive is, "How many monitors can I connect?" The M5 Pro and Max continue Apple’s trend of robust external display support. Here is how the new lineup compares:
| MacBook Model | Thunderbolt Version | External Display Support |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro (M5) | Thunderbolt 4 |
Supports up to two external displays over any combination of Thunderbolt and HDMI ports:
|
| MacBook Pro (M5 Pro) | Thunderbolt 5 |
Supports up to three external displays over any combination of Thunderbolt and HDMI ports:
|
| MacBook Pro (M5 Max) | Thunderbolt 5 |
Supports up to four external displays over any combination of Thunderbolt and HDMI ports:
|
Note: For users looking to exceed these "native" limits, Plugable’s DisplayLink-based docking stations remain the gold standard for adding extra monitors to any Apple Silicon Mac.
